BU v. East Stroudsburg Wrestling

02.15.09 - Boston, Mass. - BU wrestled East Stroudsburg University (Pa.) on Sunday after a double meet v. Brown and Holy Cross. It was rather uninspired on both ends (ESU won 19-12 with only one major decision on either side the entire bout).

Boston College v. UMass-Lowell

02.13.09 - Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Lowell thrashed BC 6-0 in a showdown between 4 and 5 in the Hockey East on Friday. I'm not particularily fond of either school, but to pretend I'm not biased, we'll say that it was hard fought until the last period when BC wet the bed. Whoops, that last bit slipped. But who can argue? 4 goals in 20 minutes in an ass-whooping no matter how it shakes out. Middle photo ran.

02.09.09 - Boston, Mass. - Chef Phil Aviles shows off his Barbecue Mac and Cheese with homemade BBQ sauce and chorizo at Masa, his South End restaurant. Very cool. No, I didn't get to try it, but it looks great.

2009 Beanpot Championship - Boston University v. Northeastern

02.09.09 - Boston, Mass. - #1 Boston University beat #2/3 Northeastern 5-2 for the 2009 Beanpot Championship at the TD Banknorth Garden on Monday night. The Terriers took home their 29th 'pot and the Huskies continued their 22 year drought. Good pictures.

Big hit in the 1st. 
Ref Scott Hansen took one in the face and had to leave the game. 
Strangest picture of the year. Luckily Northeastern goalie Brad Theissen isn't dead. 
Yip, however, was almost killed by two Northeastern defenders who took exception to Yip placing his stick in Theissen helmet. 
Northeastern forward McNeely ties the game at 2-2 in the second. 
Bonino puts BU up 2-1 in the second. He took home MVP honors. 

2009 Beanpot - Boston College v. Harvard

02.09.09 - Boston, Mass. - BC beat Harvard 4-3 in the 2009 Beanpot Consolation game. I mostly shot it for fun. Last year these two teams were in the final and played an equally competitive match. Benn Ferriero played hero for BC scoring with less than 2 minutes left.

Manhole fire

02.02.09 - East Boston, Mass. - Not much here, but a manhole cover did shoot 20 ft into the air after an underground gas line caught fire. Would've been great had I been there. Per usual, I wasn't.

Kite snowboarding (kitesnowboarding?)

01.31.09 - Boston, Mass. - Lisa Hornak (esteemed Herald photographer) saw people "kitesurfing" on I-93 heading into Boston, but couldn't stop to shoot the feature. So I had the pleasure of capturing some really cool "kitesnowboarding" at Pope John Paul II Park on the water just south of Boston. I met frenchman Johnny Hujol (pictured below) of Somerville who usually kitesurfs year round, but when it drops below 40 degrees he snowboards instead.

Northeastern v. Delaware Men's Basketball

01.31.09 - Boston, Mass. - Northeastern continued their best start in school history and remained in first place in the CAA with a 73-59 thrashing of the Delaware Blue Hens. 

It was also the first college basketball game I've shot all year and I was remind how much better the talent is than in high school (surprise!). Below are some shots.

Jazz Festival at Hynes

01.31.09 - Boston, Mass. - High school jazz musicians came to the Hynes Convention Center to try out for $175,000 in college scholarships from the Berklee College of Music. I found the jazz bands warming up in the "Preparation Room" and went to town.

01.26.09 - Boston, Mass. - Portraits of Luis a Portuguese jazz musician and guitar teacher in the Herald studio. Fun with an enormous (really like 8 ft long) softbox and a reflector.
