05.05.09 - Boston, Mass. - A man walks through the rain down Commonwealth Ave on a wet Tuesday in Boston.

Teen USA 2009 Tiffany Teixeira and Miss Conn. 2009 Monica Pietrzak cheering her on. The girls lost in the celebrity heat to the Boston Fire Department team. PUMA and Qdoba Mexican Grill host Burrito de Mayo, a race to see who can eat 4 burritos the fastest, at the Volvo Ocean Race at Fan Pier in South Boston.

The Studio celebrates 30 years in Brookline

05.04.09 - Brookline, Mass. - Donnie Wolosenko sports a popular Nicole Miller dress from the 80s at the Studio's retro fashion at the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, celebrating their opening 30 years ago.

ICSA National Semifinals

05.03.09 - Boston, Mass. - Collegiate sailors from across the country came to Boston's Fan Pier (and the site of the Volvo Ocean Race) to compete in the national sailing semifinals. The weather however didn't come to cooperate and the races were hurt by a lack of wind (go figure, no wind in Boston?). During the delays I snapped a few photos.

Northeastern Graduates

05.01.09 - Boston, Mass. - Northeastern University graduated at the TD Banknorth Garden. The one catch was that because of the swine flu, none of the students were supposed to shake hands with their professors and hand sanitizer was available every few feet.

Needless to say, bacteria were not invited to attend.

Hehe,

Will

Hand sanitizer.
Fact.

Suit

04.27.09 - Cambridge, Mass. - Jane Stabile of Cambridge and others are suing for the right to live in the condos they paid for. Their developer decided to turn the condos into rental units at the last minute and left many out in the cold.

Swine Flu at Logan

04.27.09 - The outbreak of swine flu had everyone on edge at Logan Airport. We were sent out to talk to people coming off a Delta flight from Guadalajara and a Jet Blue flight from Cancun to get their reactions. We met up with a group of 6th graders from Juarez (across the border from El Paso, Tx.) who were in Boston for a week to see American history. A few of them had brought the masks.

Marathon Monday (from a truck)

04.20.09 - Per the Herald's request, I spent Marathon Monday (the greatest holiday ever invented in the world, hands down) on the women's truck shooting the leaders and eventual winners of the marathon. Watching a 26.2 mile race for the entirity is intense to say the least and a highly recommended way to take in any long distance race.

I was cheering for the American Kara Goucher of Oregon who faded in the last quarter mile to be overtaken by Kenyan Salina Kosgei and Ethiopian Dire Tune.

Cougar Courtship

04.19.09 - Newton, Mass. - Joe Hines of Medford is a contestant on TVLand's "The Cougar" one of several 20 year-old men vying for the heart of a divorced, 40 year-old woman.

Hot!

Fire inside the block

04.19.09 - Boston, Mass. - A house fire in East Boston was complicated because the house was inside the block, so firefighters had to walk the hoses back and hope none of the other buildings caught on fire. Lucky for me, a kind soul walked up and asked me if I wanted to go on his roof to shoot.

Fun photos.

Prom dress giveaway at Simmons

04.19.09 - Boston, Mass. - Simmons College hosted their prom dresses giveaway to local girls. Very exciting.

Above.
The foreground is a little misleading. The assistant who helped this girl pick the dress out is telling her mother about it. The mother is not, despite the ominus look, upset at all. I do love the expression on everyone's face though, especially the girl's.

Hot Day Features

04.18.09 - Weather features from a hot day, the first hot day (Skirt Day if you will) can only mean one thing...a trip to the beach. The BU Beach that is behind Marsh Chapel. It was packed with people doing things (a very good thing for this photographer).

If you close your eyes, you can hear the cars...errr...waves crash against the shore.

Bruins Practice

04.18.09 - Wilmington, Mass. - Bruins practice before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ginger Beer and Absinthe Mojito at Dali in Somerville

04.14.09 - Somerville, Mass. - I had a food assignment to shoot the Green Fairy Mojito at Dali in Somerville, a Spanish Tapas Restaurant. The mojito substitutes absinthe and ginger beer for the typical ingredients of rum and seltzer. Excellent combo, highly recommended.

BPD cop gets shot (at)

04.14.09 - Mattapan, Mass. - During a traffic shot a man shot at a Boston Police officer, narrowly missing. What seemed like the entire department turned out to investigate the matter. The man was apprehended.

In case you are counting at home, that is two shootings in a row in Mattapan on Monday night after 10 pm.

Behind the Scenes at the Gardner Museum

04.13.09 - Boston, Mass. - The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was kind enough to let me do a month-long piece on their courtyard. I came up with the idea on a Valentine's Day visit to the museum with Eunice, where we commented on how so many people starred at the garden in between viewing the art works.

Head Gardener Stan Kozak gave me a tour of the greenhouses and I followed them a couple weeks later as they put in their hanging nasturtiums display. The photos are part of a audio slideshow that appeared on www.bostonherald.com and is below for your viewing pleasure.

You're welcome,

Will

Patrick Chambers becomes the new Boston University men's Basketball Coach

04.08.09 - Patrick Chambers arrived from Villanova to coach Boston University's men's basketball team. He will attempt to make BU the "Gonzaga of the East."

Shooting in Mattapan

04.07.09 - Mattapan, Mass. - In an attempted revenge shooting, a 61 year-old man was shot twice by a man with a 12 gauge shotgun while answering his door. Apparently, the shooter thought a different person was going to open up when he rang the bell. The man survived.

The top photo ran in the paper and would've been great, except that my vertical focus button was turned off. An in focus shot of the damage is on the bottom.

Jay Leno at Salem State College

04.07.09 - Salem, Mass. - Jay Leno came to Salem State College as part of their speaking series. The North Shore native was in the new earlier last week because WHDH, Boston's NBC affiliate,  was challenging the order to put his shot in their news slot at 10 p.m. Not surprisingly, WHDH lost the battle and Leno will be on at 10.

Leno tried to stay away from comments, but did say that if his show wound up on Telemundo, Boston's other NBC affiliate, he'd be willing to speak in Spanish.

Ole!

The Circus Comes to Town

04.04.09 - Boston, Mass. - The Big Apple Circus is in town for the Spring. I was sent to find a feature on a very windy day. I didn't get much, but I did like this shot where the maestro "broke" Grandma's music box.

Castle Island

04.01.09 - South Boston, Mass. - Went out to Castle Island in South Boston for some weather features on the first day of April. I shot a bulldog biting a man, planes landing at Logan Airport and this man kite surfing. I was hoping to close down some of the space between him and the planes flying overhead, but no luck, so I settled for this shot with my 300mm.
